Garden Policies

Pet Policy

Pets are not permitted at Fernwood except for select special events. Service animals are welcome. Emotional support animals are not allowed.

Weapons Prohibition

Visitors are prohibited from openly carrying or concealing firearms, air guns, and other weapons on Fernwood property, regardless of whether a federal or state license to possess such items has been issued to the visitor.

Photography Policy

The purpose of Fernwood’s photography policy is to enhance the guest experience while providing limited access to professional photographers.

The quality of Fernwood’s guest experience and the safety of our visitors are of the utmost importance. To that end, photography must not disrupt Fernwood’s operations or limit access to grounds, exhibitions, or facilities. Learn more.

Reciprocal Admission Policy

Fernwood membership has its privileges, and a key benefit of membership is reciprocal access to participating gardens, nature centers, and museums across North America. Your Fernwood membership card gives you access to reciprocal benefits that often include free admission to more than 380 public gardens and over 140 nature centers.

Reciprocal members visiting Fernwood receive admission for up to two guests upon presentation of a current membership card from participating organizations.

Group Visits and Tours

Whether you are interested in local history, natural history, or horticulture, Fernwood has something for everyone! Enhance your visit with an interpretive tour or presentation, led by a member of our Fernwood staff or docent team.

TOUR FEES: $50 per guide, per 12 people, plus admission. Speaker fees vary depending on the type of program and the size of the facility used.

DISCOUNTS: A 20% discount on regular adult admission fees applies to groups of twenty (20) or more who register in advance and pay in one lump sum. Only one discount may be applied. Stacking discounts is not permitted.

TIMES: Tours may be scheduled throughout the year during regular garden hours.

DURATION: 60 minutes (customizable)

ACCESSIBILITY: If a member of your group has limited mobility, please let us know. We are happy to remain on paved paths for the duration of the tour or offer a full or partial indoor presentation.

LUNCH: Enjoy a bite to eat before or after your tour at our cafe, The Grateful Pie Company at Fernwood. Please call 574.334.9653 to reserve group seating.

SCHEDULING: For more information or to register, please call 269.695.6491 at least two weeks in advance of your desired visit date.

In addition, Fernwood offers opportunities to learn at your own pace. Interpretive signs are located along the garden paths and woodland trails.

Environmental Education: School Field Trips

Fernwood’s gardens and natural areas are the perfect setting for students to observe, explore, and learn about nature! We offer a variety of engaging and interactive programs throughout the year for preschool-5th grade students. Each on-site program lasts 1-2 hours and may include a nature hike, an educational game, and a creative or stewardship activity. Learn more.
