Pride Month - Tea Hike

  • Fernwood Botanical Garden 13988 Range Line Road Niles, MI, 49120 United States (map)

Join Fernwood this Pride month as we celebrate the importance and beauty of diversity in our communities and in our environment! Meet new friends and enjoy a selection of iced herbal teas before hitting the trails for a guided interpretive hike focusing on the incredible biodiversity of Fernwood’s unique property. All are welcome!

Why tea? Fernwood’s tea “hike” is a spin on tea dances. Popular in the late 1800s, traditional tea dances were social gatherings that coincided with afternoon tea time and took place in the garden. In the 1950s, New York City’s gay community brought new meaning to tea dances in response to being banned from bars and served alcohol. Tea dances were organized outside of the city and provided attendees with safe outdoor spaces where they could enjoy drinks, music, and meet others.
