Knee-high Naturalists

Children ages 4 and 5 explore the woods and gardens of Fernwood to learn about nature. Snack is provided.

Curious Coyotes: Birds

Children ages 6-10 discover the amazing birds that live at Fernwood and in our backyards. Bring binoculars from home or use Fernwood’s. Please dress for walking the trails.

Pond Study for Kids

Children ages 6-10 visit Fernwood’s ponds to catch crayfish, tadpoles, dragonfly nymphs, giant water bugs, and more. Dress in old clothes and shoes, and bring a change of fresh clothes.

Curious Coyotes: Tallgrass Prairies

Have you ever wondered what adaptations plants need to survive in a prairie? What kinds of challenges  did pioneers face as they traveled through this harsh environment? And what kinds of threats do prairies face today? Children ages 6-10 enjoy an afternoon in the tallgrass prairie. Come learn all about this unique and important ecosystem! Please dress for warm, sunny conditions, and bring a water bottle.

Thanks to a grant from the Jewish Women’s Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley, families visiting Fernwood can borrow backpacks with activities to do while exploring the grounds.

  • The birds backpack includes binoculars, field guides, and checklists.
  • The gardens backpack contains scavenger hunts, books on plants and flowers, an insect field guide, and a bug box. 
  • The preschoolers backpack helps kids explore with their five senses and contains mystery smells, pictures, magnifiers, books, etc.
