Curious Coyotes: Skulls

What can you learn from an animal’s skull?  Its diet (carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore), its age (skull plates haven’t fused on babies, teeth are worn on old individuals), if it was male or female (male skulls can be larger) – and what kind of animal it belongs to! Children ages 6-10 explore our extensive skull collection as they learn more about local critters. Please dress for walking the trails.

Check out a backpack on your next visit!
Thanks to a grant from the Jewish Women’s Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley, families visiting Fernwood can borrow backpacks with activities to do while exploring the grounds.

  • The birds backpack includes binoculars, field guides, and checklists.
  • The gardens backpack contains scavenger hunts, books on plants and flowers, an insect field guide, and a bug box.
  • The preschoolers backpack helps kids explore with their five senses and contains mystery smells, pictures, magnifiers, books, etc.

Check out backpacks at the Front Desk.
