Shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day

You can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day without some shamrocks! Children ages 4-6 with an adult learn about St. Patty’s Day traditions and make some shamrocks to bring luck at home. Perhaps we’ll even find a leprechaun at Fernwood!

Nature Saplings
Children ages 2½ - 3½ with an adult enjoy an introduction to nature. Please dress for walking the trails.

Cookies & Creations: Spring Break
Cookies and creations is a party with paint - and you’re invited! Join local artist, Julie Nitz with JLN Studio for art classes at Fernwood. This program includes all painting materials, milk, and delicious homemade cookies. Space is limited. No experience is needed. Parents are encouraged to assist younger artists under the age of 10. If parents would like to paint alongside your child, please register separately.


Tuesday, April 3, 3–4:30pm
This creative watercolor color pencil class is perfect for ages 5-13. Learn the technique of using watercolor pencils and water to create a beautiful piece. There are three watercolor coloring page options to choose from. The finished piece will be mounted on a color 11x14 matte board.

Have fun learning to paint a seasonal, floral scene with acrylic paints on canvas. Recommended for ages 10-16.

Terrariums for Mom

Mother’s Day is coming, how about making an upcycled terrarium from two-liter bottles for Mom, Grandma, or any special lady? For children ages 7-10, adults are welcome to participate with their child as well. All materials are provided.

Curious Coyotes: Raptors

Eagles, hawks, owls, and falcons – they are the most powerful birds in nature, with superb vision to spot prey and sharp talons to catch a meal. Children ages 6-10 learn more about raptors and their amazing adaptations. Please dress for walking the trails.

Check out a backpack on your next visit!
Thanks to a grant from the Jewish Women’s Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley, families visiting Fernwood can borrow backpacks with activities to do while exploring the grounds.

  • The birds backpack includes binoculars, field guides, and checklists.
  • The gardens backpack contains scavenger hunts, books on plants and flowers, an insect field guide, and a bug box. 
  • The preschoolers backpack helps kids explore with their five senses and contains mystery smells, pictures, magnifiers, books, etc.
