Summer Day Camps

Fernwood Summer Camps
It was a great 2017 for Fernwood Summer Camps!

Both fun and learning were the rule along the nature trails and in the gardens as our camps were very busy this summer! 144 children attended the Jon Meyer Nature Camps for children ages 4-12. Highlights included the ever-popular pond study, meeting the Nature Center educational critters, geocaching, cool projects like camouflage critters and edible landfills, and field trips for the older campers to Sarett Nature Center and canoeing on Black Lake.

73 campers attended the Roy and Ethelbel Knauer Art Camps to learn about "Playing with Color." After learning about the color wheel, kids made projects such as "colorpillars," warm/cool masks, the 100 color challenge, and the ever-popular tie-dye Tshirts.

Thanks to UltraCamp of Niles for hosting our camp registration this year, and thanks to all families for their patience as we switched to this system. Already thinking about our 2018 summer camps? The schedule will be posted on our website on February 1, or call Head Naturalist Wendy Jones for more information.

Interested in designing our camp Tshirt for next year? Please submit a black-and-white line drawing of a nature design (more details available upon request).

Jon Meyer Nature Day Camps

Fernwood’s forests, pond, river, and prairie serve as the classrooms for these popular day camps. Hikes along nature trails, fun games, educational activities, and crafts open children to the wonders of nature while encouraging appreciation of the plants and animals of Michiana.

What parents are saying about Fernwood's nature day camps:

"In this day of "media saturation" of our children, I treasure the time my child can spend in the beauty of Fernwood and exploring all you offer."

"I must say you all run the best camps around by far! How well organized they are, everyone that works does an excellent job."

Roy and Ethelbel Knauer Art Camps

An ideal complementary course to the Jon Meyer Nature Camps, Fernwood’s Roy and Ethelbel Knauer Art Camps combine the arts with natural sciences and are designed to stimulate curiosity, appreciation, and knowledge of the natural world. This year’s theme is “Playing with Color,” with campers use Fernwood’s beautiful gardens and natural areas to inspire the creation of diverse mixed media projects including ceramics, tie dye, drawing/painting, sculpture, and much more, that showcase the beauty of color. On the last day of each session parents are invited to a gallery showing of all the children’s wonderful creations.

What parents are saying about Fernwood's art day camps:

"Wonderful art programs, teachers, beautiful locations."

"My son gets a chance to express his individuality in each project and really likes being a part of the final presentations."
